Mel Gibson (Still) Selling Costa Rican Jungle Spread

SELLER: Mel Gibson
LOCATION: Guanacaste, Costa Rica
PRICE: $30,000,000
SIZE: 500 acres and multiple residences

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Two-time Oscar-winning, sometimes volatile and occasionally erratically misbehaved Tinseltown vet Mel Gibson paid a reported $25.8 million in 2007 for a 500-acre, beach front jungle compound on the pristine and fairly remote Nicoya Peninsula in the Central American country of Coast Rica.

The understated but luxurious and very decoratively earth tonal multi-residence compound, between the villages of Nosara and Sámara, was thrust into the tabloid hot lights in 2008 when Mister Gibson invited a then deeply troubled Britney Spears to relax and ride ATVs on the beach. Naturally, swarms of paps followed so it’s not clear how much peace she was able to find there but anyways…. Some of the children may recall that some years later there was totally unsubstantiated poppycock that pop cynosure Lady Gaga might like to acquire the far-flung compound. (She did not.)

In 2010, Mister Gibson put the drop dead stunning and mostly rain property on the market for $35 million. With no takers, the casually well-appointed compound was re-listed in March 2012 at the markedly reduced price of $29.8 million. Now, as was revealed by the industrious kids at Curbed, the largely unspoiled property is still on the market with an asking price of $29.75 million.

The three residences include a roomy, two-story hacienda style main residence, Casa Guanacaste, arranged around a small walled courtyard. There are seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, according to a 2010 report in Hollywood Reporter, as well numerous outdoor living areas and a free-form swimming pool. Two guesthouses, Casa Barrigona and Casa Dorada, each have two bedrooms, ocean view verandas and a private swimming pool. The property also includes a Balinese-style open-air recreation cabana and an itty-bitty jungle cottage.

Mister Gibson maintains a small but impressive property portfolio that includes (but is not limited to) Mago Island, an all but undeveloped 5,400-acre island in Fiji. He also owns at least one ocean front house in Malibu as well as an estate in the mountains above Malibu that he acquired in July 2008 for $11.5 million from freshly divorced David Duchovney and Téa Leoni.
